Summary
Two Girl Scouts asked to place one eastern screech owl nesting box in Haslet Park as a Bronze Award project; the board accepted the donation and recommended administrative approval, with Public Works offering mounting assistance and a follow-up report once the box attracts owls.
Eleanor and Sarah, junior Girl Scouts from Troop 2755, told the Haslet Parks and Recreation Board on Jan. 14 that they want to install a single eastern screech owl nesting box in Haslet Park as part of their Girl Scout Bronze Award project. "We are asking for permission to place 1 eastern screech owl nesting box in Haslet Park," Eleanor said, explaining that screech owls help control rodents and need tree cavities that are becoming scarce.
Troop leader Beth Kent said the girls trained at the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center and followed Audubon Association plans when building the boxes. Public Works staff member James said the department had no objection to the project and identified two likely locations in Community Park — an area south of the creek with larger trees and a northwest natural area — and offered to assist with mounting if requested.
Cindy moved that the board accept the Scouts' donation of an owl box for Cassette Community Park; Chuck seconded the motion and the board approved it. The board also voted to recommend the project to city council if staff determines council action is required for park installations. Board members asked that the Scouts provide a brief report back if an owl occupies the box.
The Scouts described safety and maintenance measures: the boxes were built to Audubon guidelines, will be mounted securely by an adult, and checked regularly. Eleanor added that the girls will place natural material in the box to help attract owls and plan to monitor the site.
Next steps: Public Works will confirm the precise placement and mounting method, staff will determine whether administrative approval is sufficient or if the city council must act, and the Scouts will be notified when an installation date is set.
