Batavia aldermen on Monday endorsed a conditional application for a $15,000 Illinois Arts Council grant to install a six‑panel mural on the west side of the city’s police station.
Alderman Beck, representing the Water Street Studio Public Art Initiative, told the council the panels would depict Batavia’s past, present and future — including the Fox River, neighborhood life and stewardship themes — and would be painted directly onto boarded‑up windows. She said the application is due Jan. 15 and still must receive historic preservation approval before installation.
Beck moved that the council provide a conditional endorsement so the group can submit the grant application; Alderman Malay seconded the motion. The council approved the endorsement by roll call (the results were announced in the meeting as 13 yes, 1 absent).
The initiative aims to celebrate Batavia’s history and support public art downtown, and proponents asked residents to support the project through the normal historic‑preservation review and permitting processes. Next steps listed by proponents include final historic‑preservation approval and submission of the Illinois Arts Council application by the Jan. 15 deadline.
