Port Richey council reviews mural options for Olsner Park, splits approach to main wall and restroom art

Port Richey — The council reviewed a community arts committee (CAC) presentation Jan. 13 about proposed murals at Olsner Park.
Linda Rodriguez of the CAC presented three artist concepts and three pricing tiers ranging from roughly $10,000 to $32,000, asked whether the project should be city-funded or accept sponsorships, and requested guidance on selection and timeline. Rodriguez said artists can provide material lists and sample work; council members expressed interest in seeing the artists in person and asked staff to agendize the proposals for a February meeting.
Council discussed a known ownership issue with the large external wall proposed for the principal mural (the owner’s willingness and legal permission must be resolved). The council agreed the city could move forward more quickly on the interior bathroom wall at Olsner Park, which sits on city property and would be less legally complex. Several councilmembers supported getting an artist rendition for the bathroom wall first so the community can see a tangible result while the larger-wall ownership question is resolved.
Council also discussed potential sponsorship recognition (plaques) and whether CRA funds or city funds should cover the project. Staff was asked to invite the artists and bring full proposals, including final prices and material details, to the February agenda.
