"We've been hesitant to bring a policy forward because AI conversations have changed so quickly," a board member said, noting the district already has handbook language about appropriate and ethical use. The administration argued a formal board-level policy is now appropriate as the district starts pilot use by staff and students.
Board members asked whether the draft came from Neola, the common policy-service vendor. Administration said the text was edited collaboratively and that staff would confirm the source and ensure the final draft is clearly labeled in the policy packet.
A motion to move the policy forward was made and seconded; the board carried the motion by voice vote with no roll-call tally recorded. The item will return for a subsequent meeting when the board will consider adoption.
The action comes as the district prepares a limited student AI launch and related staff training; the policy is intended to provide broad governance while staff-level handbooks continue to give detailed guidance for day-to-day use.
