Deputy Chief Dean Thomas told the Civil Service Commission on Jan. 8 that the police department has two officers newly entering the onboarding process and continues to recruit to fill four current vacancies.
“We had a, offer Ashbrook, graduate of the academy in December, so he is now in his orientation phase,” Dean Thomas said, adding that Ashbrook will begin field training (FTO) within one to two weeks. He also reported that an advanced-entry hire, Officer Graves, “will start his orientation phase next week.”
An unidentified staff member told commissioners the entry-level eligibility list was refreshed that day: “I will add that, the eligibility list was refreshed today… removed 43 candidates… and today, I added in 42 more for a total of hundred hundred and 17 on the entry level.” The transcript records the totals but does not show separate documentation in the meeting packet; the commission did not record a formal vote on staffing actions.
Department managers said there are four vacancies listed, including one detective. Dean Thomas explained detectives are often promoted from patrol; hiring to fill authorized positions would allow the department to move an officer from patrol into detectives, which would in turn create two patrol openings.
The sergeant eligibility list currently has five names and is valid until Nov. 9. There are no current vacancies for community service officers, and one lateral applicant has been invited to command interviews (described as the second step in the lateral process).
Commissioners and staff agreed to continue monitoring eligibility lists and recruitment progress and to convene ad hoc meetings if emergent staffing issues arise.
