Jackson honors Wanda “Mama Tutu” Beavers with city proclamation

Mayor Daniel J. Mahoney read a city proclamation on Tuesday honoring Wanda Beavers, known in Jackson as “Mama Tutu,” for longtime service to children, families and neighborhoods.
The proclamation, read into the record by Mahoney, said Beavers had “devoted her life to serving children, families, and neighborhoods with compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment” and called upon residents to “recognize and celebrate her extraordinary service.” Beavers accepted the proclamation at the dais and thanked the council and the community.
A representative from WLNS TV told the council the station had chosen Beavers as one of its 2026 'remarkable women,' will profile her work and will give a $1,000 check to a charity of her choice. Beavers said she credited her faith and praised community members for supporting her work over the years.
The event closed with council members congratulating Beavers and inviting the community to celebrate her contributions in the weeks ahead.
