Summary
Cognia presented Carroll County Schools with its 2025 System of Distinction award — the only Georgia district to receive the honor — and the board recognized several athletic and student achievements at its January 2026 meeting.
Carroll County Schools was formally recognized as a 2025 Cognia System of Distinction at the school board's January 2026 meeting, a visiting Cognia representative told the board and community.
"Carroll County Schools is the only system in Georgia that earned that recognition," Dr. Emily Klein of Cognia said as she presented the award, noting the designation recognizes leadership, continuous improvement and documented, evidence-based practices. She added that the district "serves more than 16,000 students in Carroll County Schools." The presentation included a system photo with board and district staff.
The award comes after an external review by Cognia's accreditation process. Dr. Klein said the designation reflects a district that invites independent review and uses evidence to guide improvement. Superintendent Scott Cowart thanked staff and school leaders, saying, "All of us it's the teachers in the classroom on a daily basis, who make a difference in, every child's life."
Board members used the meeting to recognize athletic and student achievements alongside the accreditation news. The Bowden High School football team was acknowledged for winning a fourth straight single-A division 2 state championship and a region title; Central High School was recognized for a third consecutive region championship in its classification. Individual student honors mentioned by the superintendent included state cross-country championships and regional athletic and arts awards.
The board also accepted recognition from the Georgia School Boards Association for governance and leadership in 2025. District leaders asked staff to notify families and the public about the Cognia honor and other accomplishments.
The recognitions concluded before the board moved into routine business. The district did not provide further detail in the transcript about external funding tied to the Cognia process or specific next steps beyond continued improvement efforts and public notification.
