Shakopee board elects Peterson chair, fills officers and approves organizational items

Shakopee Public School District’s school board met Jan. 5 for its annual organizational session and selected officers, confirmed committee assignments and approved a slate of routine administrative authorizations.
The board nominated and elected Christie Peterson as chair by acclamation. Tim Brophy was elected vice chair by acclamation. Two candidates were nominated for treasurer; after brief remarks the board voted and elected Nick Sinek by a reported 5–2 tally. Caroline Lopez was elected clerk by acclamation.
The meeting included routine fiscal and administrative approvals. The board authorized the clerk, treasurer and chair to be signers on district checks and approved the use of facsimile signatures for those officials when appropriate. It designated the director of finance and operations to deposit and invest surplus funds, approved the district’s listed depositories, and authorized electronic fund transfers. The board also approved that the chair and superintendent (or designee) may contact and consult the district’s designated law firm for legal matters.
On public notices, the board — noting the absence of a local newspaper serving the district — designated the district website as the official location for public notices and board information and confirmed the district office as the official physical location for posting meeting notices.
Board members discussed and voted to retain the current board compensation structure ($4,500 per year, with an additional $500 for officers) and to continue monitoring whether a different stipend structure would be appropriate in the future.
The board reviewed standing committee and liaison assignments (finance and facilities, policy, personnel, community engagement and several liaison roles). After discussion the board moved item 7.1 from information to action and approved the committee and liaison appointments as presented.
"I hereby declare that Christie Peterson is elected by acclamation for the position of chair," the presiding officer announced after nominations closed. On the treasurer vote, one member summarized the tally aloud as a 5–2 result in favor of Sinek.
The meeting concluded with scheduling items and reminders about a Jan. 26 joint meeting with Scott County. The board adjourned after completing its agenda.
