MSD Steuben County’s Board of Trustees adopted the 2028–29 academic calendar at its Jan. 13 meeting after a presentation explaining efforts to align start dates, fall/winter/spring breaks and graduation timing across the district.
Presenter Mister Wagner said the goal is consistency across schools so students and families have predictable schedules; the proposal schedules graduations one week after students’ last day of classes to reduce the gap between finals and commencement. He noted that for some years the graduation date will fall on the Memorial Day weekend but that high school staff and athletic directors had been consulted and did not object.
Board members asked about potential conflicts with state track and sectional baseball schedules; Wagner said the district will compare dates to the IHSA release when those dates are available and adjust where feasible. The board approved the calendar by roll-call vote (motion carries 7–0).
The approved calendar was presented as consistent with nearby districts’ start and end dates, and administration said it will revisit athletics scheduling if state postseason dates create conflicts.
