Norwalk emergency management and training leaders preview winter tabletop and upcoming courses

Norwalk City officials discussed winter preparedness and the department’s training calendar.
Emergency Management lead Michelle said the city has experienced several winter storms and has started using a standardized winter briefing sheet whenever the National Weather Service issues a watch or warning. She previewed a regional tabletop exercise for winter-storm and extreme-cold response at Fairfield University with about 200 participants and said some 20 Norwalk staff will attend. Michelle also noted ongoing work to formalize family-assistance-center planning, reunification resources and mental-health and social-service partnerships.
Training staff reported recent and upcoming activities: SCBA fit testing for the current masks was completed in December and January, several personnel attended Texas A&M TEEX active-threat and HAZMAT communications courses, an EMS refresher runs through Feb. 20, and the department will host a Fire Instructor 2 class in March alongside planned hazmat and rope-rescue refreshers later in the year. Training staff also said SCBA repair and maintenance training will be provided to select members because the new packs differ from the old models.
Commissioners praised the planning and training; no formal actions were taken.
