LAFAYETTE — Lafayette City Council on Tuesday recognized Mayor J.D. Mangat’s years of local service with a proclamation and a unanimous vote.
Councilors took turns recounting anecdotes about Mangat’s time as a teacher and mayor and saying he made city government accessible to residents. “You were always out there,” Councilor Chenault said, recalling Mangat’s work in local schools. Councilor Gallegos said the proclamation “does not do justice for the work you’ve done for the city.”
Mangat, who had announced his resignation earlier, thanked colleagues for the plaque and flowers and urged the council to select a successor who would be “dedicated to the community” and “a collaborator” who would not seek to divide the council. “Choose someone that will uplift others,” Mangat said.
Council moved, seconded and approved the proclamation by voice vote; the mayor pro tem announced the motion passed unanimously.
The proclamation was a ceremonial recognition and does not change the formal process to fill the vacant council seat, a separate agenda item later in the meeting.
The council then moved to the next agenda items, beginning the presentations portion of the meeting.
