Commission sets Nils Adams Road speed limit at 35 mph after member survey and anecdotal concerns

The Dickson County Commission voted to set the speed limit on Nils Adams Road at 35 miles per hour after commissioners discussed road characteristics and available information. Commissioner Simpkins made the motion, which was seconded by Commissioner McElwain; the motion passed by voice vote.
A presenter who surveyed the road said a formal traffic study was not completed but described the road as about 1.3 miles long with 31 houses, hilly and curvy, and with one stretch where a speed survey could be run. "It's 1.3 miles ... It has 31 houses on it," the presenter said, and suggested that 30 or 35 mph would be appropriate even without a full study. The presenter also noted that if the county uses a countywide speed standard of 35 mph, sign changes would not be needed.
A commissioner added a personal anecdote about attempting to drive the road at 45 mph and concluded 35 mph is sufficient. Commissioners acknowledged they can still request a formal study later but proceeded with the 35 mph designation based on the survey and local knowledge.
The motion passed by voice vote. County staff will implement the speed-limit signage and retain the option to commission a formal traffic study if future safety data or complaints warrant one.
