Deer Creek board adopts single-path diploma, keeps 23-credit minimum

The Deer Creek School Board on a 4-0 vote approved changes to policy IKF that replace the district's previous multiple diploma tracks with a single diploma plan beginning with the class identified in the agenda, while keeping the district's 23-credit minimum.
Mark Phillips, curriculum and instruction, told the board the new policy retains the district's core expectations ("you need 4 English, 4 math, 3 science, 3 social studies") and adds six pathway credits and three elective credits. "Pathways are actually gonna be tied to what is called I cap, which is your, individual individualized career academic plan," Phillips said. He added, "Pathway credits are never going to be the thing that stops someone from graduating." The board then voted to adopt the policy changes.
The change also clarifies that high-school math courses completed in eighth grade, such as algebra or geometry, will count toward one of the required four high-school math credits and the grade will be recorded on the diploma. Phillips said the district intends to evaluate out-of-state coursework for equivalency when transfer students enroll.
Board members asked how the district handles benchmark outliers and individual student needs; Phillips said benchmark data are used at building and district levels to identify gaps and the district will follow up at the site level and with RTI or enrichment as needed. The board approved the IKF policy changes unanimously.
Next steps: the policy was adopted at the meeting and will be implemented by district staff in accordance with the timeline described in the board packet.
