The Crete Public Schools Board of Education voted to adopt the 2026–27 school calendar after a presentation on development, staff feedback and statutory hour requirements.
Chief Academic Officer Doctor Hayek explained the calendar process, noting the district must meet minimum instructional‑hour requirements (citing Rule 10 and Rule 11). Hayek described three options and two feedback rounds with staff; the preferred option moves staff start to Aug. 12 so new teachers begin in August rather than July and to avoid conflicts with NSAA postseason events. "With a later start date, does come a later end date," Hayek said, noting the last student day is scheduled for May 19 (pending any snow days) and graduation for May 15.
Hayek also explained scheduling changes intended to balance semesters and adjust professional‑development placement to increase consistent five‑day weeks in the first semester. Board members asked about parent‑teacher conference formats and participation; Hayek said the district is having an ongoing conversation and that principals would welcome input at working meetings.
A roll‑call vote carried the motion to approve the calendar.
