Committee amends draft officer-term policy to three years and sends it for second reading

One committee member, citing examples from other Wisconsin districts and the National Association of School Boards, said a multi-year term could provide leadership stability. That speaker suggested five years as a possible limit but acknowledged the risk of stagnation and noted annual organization meetings would still allow officers to be re-elected or replaced each year.
Dr. Gershwin told the committee a three-year term better aligns with the board’s election cycles and would offer stability without creating overly long tenures. "I do believe three years aligns with your election cycles as well," Dr. Gershwin said.
After discussion, a motion was made to amend the draft to set the officer term at three years and to send the amended policy to a second reading at the next policy meeting. The motion was seconded, members voted in favor by voice vote and the motion carried. The chair confirmed the amended policy will return to the policy committee for second reading before being forwarded to the full board for final action.
Clarifying details discussed during the meeting included that annual organization meetings still provide an opportunity to elect or remove officers each year, and that a term-limit policy would not prevent the board from voting annually on officers. One committee member described the intent of a limit as allowing a year off after a specified number of consecutive terms; details of any mandatory hiatus were not finalized and will be reviewed in the second-reading draft.
The committee did not take a final vote to adopt Policy 141.1; it sent the amended draft forward to the committee’s next meeting for a second reading and resolution.
