Historical society seeks $20,000 from Marathon County for 250th-anniversary programs

Ben Rowan, representing the Marathon County Historical Society, asked the county board on Nov. 3 for $20,000 to support countywide programming for the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, saying the work would be matched by private sponsorships and grants.
Rowan said the proposal includes a roving historian video series that would spotlight five local communities, school presentations, behind-the-scenes museum experiences, a community-wide event with vendors and a time-capsule ceremony, artist-commissioned murals and a traveling exhibit that would rotate through towns, libraries and municipal centers. "The funding we're requesting will help us launch a balanced and accessible celebration," Rowan said, and added that the society would scale the program if the county could not provide full funding.
Chair Robinson noted HR Finance had moved the request forward as a budget amendment to be considered from the 2025 contingency fund; the board reserved final action for the Nov. 11 meeting.
