The Muscatine County Board of Supervisors voted Nov. 3 to accept a variance granted by the Muscatine County Board of Adjustment that permits a one‑room addition to an existing house on Nye Avenue to sit 39 feet from the front lot line rather than the standard 50 feet.
County Development Director Eric Furnace explained the Board of Adjustment reviewed the case on Oct. 24, 2025 under a state law change effective July 1 that, in his words, “says numeric or dimensional variances no longer require a hardship burden” and instead use a “practical difficulties” standard. The Board of Adjustment concluded a practical difficulty existed given the property’s layout and a prior smaller variance recently granted to the homeowner.
Furnace said the proposed addition is modest — roughly a 14‑by‑14 or 15‑by‑15 room — and that the dead‑end nature of Nye Avenue and lack of traffic reduce long‑term impacts on county roadways. The board moved, seconded and approved a motion to accept the Board of Adjustment’s variance.
