Conway council reviews September finances; staff projects modest sales-tax shortfall

Conway City Council reviewed the city's monthly financial report for the period ending Sept. 30, 2025, and approved the statement of accounts by a 7-0 vote.
Finance staff reported a strong month for sales tax, up 8.4% for September and 1.2% year-to-date. Staff projected, however, that if monthly growth averages about 6% for the remainder of the year the city would fall short of its sales-tax budget by roughly $300,000. "I'm projecting our sales tax revenue at the end of the year is gonna be $30,200,000. Our budget's $30,500,000," the finance presenter said.
Officials also highlighted offsets that could reduce the shortfall. Interest income was reported about $282,000 over budget year-to-date, and state "turnbacks" (payments returned to the city) have outperformed the plan. Parks-and-recreation revenue and franchise fees were also cited as line items that have beaten budget projections.
Councilmember motioned and the council approved the financials without further discussion. The approval does not change the city's budget; staff said they will continue to monitor monthly receipts and report back to the council if projections change.
