Lacey staff recap first regional advisory board meeting; commission to consider quarterly joint meetings

Shannon Kelly Fong, assistant city manager, briefed the Lacey Commission on Equity on a Sept. 22 regional advisory board meeting that brought together advisory board members and staff from Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater and Thurston County.
Fong said the session—held at the Thurston County Fairgrounds—had about 20 participants and produced three headline themes: share best practices (including joint meetings and chair check-ins), define and educate about diversity/equity/inclusion/belonging, and increase engagement through regional outreach. "It was strongly influenced by some of the things that we have going on here," Fong said.
Among recommendations were quarterly regional meetings with rotating hosts, an informational newsletter (digital and limited print), and involving youth and trusted community messengers for outreach. Commissioners raised practical questions about formats, distribution to residents without internet access and staffing resources for a regular newsletter.
No formal action was taken; staff said it will work with regional partners to plan future meetings and return with implementation suggestions for the commission’s next agenda.
