Senate committee advances veterans discount bill, hears sponsor testimony for Navy 250th resolution

Columbus — The Senate Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee unanimously moved Senate Bill 223 to the committee on rules and reference and heard multiple other items during its meeting.
Vice Chair Wilson moved to “favorably report Senate Bill 2 23 to the committee on rules and reference.” A roll call returned yes votes from Chair Johnson; Vice Chair Wilson; Ranking Member Weinstein; Senator Craig; Senator Patton; and Senator Schaeffer. The motion carried and the committee’s clerk recorded the advancement of SB 223 to the rules and reference committee.
The committee also completed hearings or accepted testimony on several other measures. A third hearing on Sub House Bill 23, described in the agenda as creating an escaped-convict alert program, concluded with no in-person testimony. A second hearing on Senate Bill 253 received written-only testimony from Colonel (Ret.) William Butler of the National Veterans Memorial Museum; no witnesses appeared in person.
Members heard sponsor testimony on House Concurrent Resolution 20, introduced by Representatives Davila and Santucci, which recognizes the United States Navy’s 250th anniversary. Representative Davila said the resolution commemorates the Navy’s founding on Oct. 13, 1775, and highlighted Ohio’s historical connections to naval service. Representative Santucci joined sponsor testimony and asked the committee to move the resolution forward so it may reach the governor.
No further committee votes were recorded at the meeting. Chair Johnson closed the session after other business was called and none was brought.
