Tuscaloosa board reviews first reading of 2026–27 academic calendar; final vote scheduled for Dec. 16
Summary
At a first reading, district staff presented a 2026–27 academic calendar with 177 student days and 187 staff days, added three-day weekends and staff development days, and reported survey feedback showing strong support for two-week winter break and a full Thanksgiving week.
Doctor Cameron presented a first reading of the Tuscaloosa City Schools 2026–27 academic calendar, describing the draft as 177 student days and 187 staff days and noting the calendar was informed by a district survey. “This is a first read for our 2627 academic calendar. It represents 177 student days, 187 staff days,” Doctor Cameron said.
School staff told the board 100% of survey respondents wanted two weeks for winter break and about 85% preferred the Thanksgiving week included; the draft adds several three-day weekends and preserves staff development days adjacent to those breaks. The presenter said the district contacted the county to coordinate calendars but the county had not finalized its calendar because of a superintendent search.
Board members asked how the draft differs from 2024–25; Doctor Cameron pointed to the additional three-day weekends and the insertion of staff development days. The board was told the final reading and vote on the calendar will occur at the Dec. 16 meeting and members were asked to forward any questions to Doctor Cameron before that date.
