Public commenters sharply divided over staff conduct; union president defends educators

A contentious public-comment period at the Oct. 27 Battle Ground School Board meeting featured sharply divergent views about staff conduct, discipline policy changes and district culture.

Union defense and teacher concerns - Mary Mendoza Hansel, president of the Battle Ground Education Association, told the board that social-media posts and public rhetoric have unfairly portrayed teachers and the union as a "boogeyman." She said union members are local educators, counselors and support staff who "work here, but we also live here, shop here, go to church here, vote here, and send our own children to these same schools." Hansel urged the public and board to recognize educators as community members advocating for smaller class sizes, mental-health supports and better learning conditions.
