SCUC ISD early‑childhood math and literacy goals off to solid start; third‑grade targets nearly met at fall baseline

The district uses MAP Growth to set and monitor its five‑year third‑grade goals. Staff reported the fall baseline for third‑grade average/high‑average/high combined is 62.83% in math and 64.74% in literacy. For the cohort of students who were third graders last year and are now fourth graders, the fall baseline was 66.42% for math and 68.79% for literacy, both above the district proficiency benchmarks.
Staff said the district is focusing on Tier‑1 classroom instruction, targeted professional development for early grades (this year: second grade teachers; prior years: kindergarten and first grade), implementation support for the newly adopted STEMscopes K–8 materials, and differentiated instruction strategies tied to honors course planning.
The district also uses MAP Growth’s STAAR‑projected proficiency output to guide midyear instructional adjustments and noted that STAR/STAAR state assessments will remain the summative checks this year and next; assessment changes are scheduled for 2027–28 under state plans, staff said.
Trustees asked whether the district’s MAP goals represent growth or raw achievement; staff clarified the goals are achievement targets tied to the 50th percentile benchmarks and that MAP provides STAAR projection data used for midyear course corrections and intervention planning.
