The Northfield Public School Board on Oct. 14 approved the addition of one special-education paraprofessional (6.75 hours per day) at Bridgewater Elementary to support several newly enrolled students with complex medical self-care and safety needs.
Director of Special Services Sarah Pratt described a recent, short-notice rise in enrollment of students with significant medical needs and said building and district special-education leadership had reviewed allocations and could not cover the need without adding staff. “I am just here to respectfully request your consideration for approval of 1 additional FTE at 6.75 hours per day of a special ed educational paraprofessional at, Bridgewater Elementary,” Pratt told the board.
Pratt said the total salary-and-benefits cost for the position is $52,005.29 and that state special-education reimbursement would reduce the district’s share to about $23,656 at this time. Board members moved to add the request to the meeting’s action items and then approved the hire during the action portion of the agenda. The board called for aye votes and the motion passed.
The district will proceed to fill the position through its normal hiring processes; Director Pratt and building leadership will coordinate assignment and onboarding.
