The Brockton Public Schools Facilities Subcommittee voted unanimously on Oct. 7 to approve purchase and reinstallation of the turf at Marciano Stadium, reversing earlier practice of contracting a full vendor package and instead buying the turf directly and soliciting installation bids.
Facilities Director Ken Thompson told the committee that by purchasing the turf product directly the district could "save a few $100,000" compared with an all‑in vendor solution. Thompson also said the field — last replaced around 2010 — has been well maintained but is nearing the end of its useful life. "It's beyond its useful life...but it did pass" the most recent GMAX impact test, he said.
Vice Chair Tony Rodriguez, who moved the motion, said the approach would reduce cost and allow the district to prioritize student safety improvements such as new shock‑absorbent padding. "It will save a tremendous amount of money," Rodriguez said, and the motion to approve the purchase and reinstallation was seconded by Claudio Gomes and passed by a show of hands.
Committee members asked staff to confirm funding sources before issuing the formal RFP for installation; Thompson said the procurement package is being prepared and will go to bid once funding is identified.
The decision assigns procurement staff to finalize purchase terms and prepare an installation RFP while the facilities team investigates confirmed funding sources, including a previously approved $1.8 million city allocation for Marciano resurfacing referenced by the vice chair.
