Jacob (staff) said the current sign code revision removed a prior planning-commission review path and left ambiguity about multi-entrance retail spaces; the applicant's representative, Matt Leitner of HGHB, said the second sign is small (roughly 3.5 sq ft) and appropriate for the interior walkway entrance.
Commissioners found the courtyard entrance an "unusual circumstance" that justifies a second sign and agreed the sign as proposed fits Carmel's subdued character. Several commissioners said staff should return to the City Council with a narrow code amendment to replace ambiguous language and allow staff-level approval for routine second signs while referring questionable cases to the commission. "Let's save time," one commissioner said, urging a clear standard for when second signs are allowed.
Motion to approve the sign permit and direct staff to pursue code clarification passed unanimously on roll call.
