College Place proclaims Week Without Driving; accessibility group schedules Sept. 30 walkabout

Mayor Norma L. Hernandez read a Week Without Driving proclamation at the Sept. 23 College Place City Council meeting, designating Sept. 29–Oct. 5, 2025 as an observance to highlight transportation access and equity.
Vicky Ostrander, representing the Walla Walla–Columbia County Accessibility Community Advisory Committee, described a planned walkabout on Sept. 30 that will include participants with a range of mobility needs — people who are blind and walking with a cane, people who use mobility scooters and wheelchair users — to evaluate crosswalks, sidewalks and transit access in the Walla Walla area. "Try riding the Valley Transit or your bicycles," Ostrander said, encouraging residents to experience local transit and identify barriers.
The mayor thanked the committee and invited the presenters to receive the proclamation. The outreach event is an introductory activity for the Week Without Driving campaign and organizers asked residents to consider participating or to try alternate modes even if they cannot complete a full week without driving.
