Students pitch club charters and student reps report mixed results of new phone policy

Multiple student-led presentations and student-representative remarks were on the Sept. 20 Valley Central board agenda.

Profe Montalvo introduced the proposed VC Dance Club; student speakers Madison and Amelia described the club’s mission "to inspire creativity" and celebrate cultural heritage through dance, said membership would be open (no tryouts), and said funds raised would pay for uniforms, costumes and rehearsal supplies. Amelia said the charter responds to student initiative and would give students an inclusive space "especially those who may not connect through sports." The board asked clarifying questions about tryouts and membership policy, and students confirmed "everyone is welcome."

Middle school art teacher Dean Lano and student Autumn proposed a plant/gardening club focused on producing and sharing plants, creating pollinator gardens and classroom growth systems and partnering with local growers and nonprofits. Lano said the charter could support courtyard beautification and provide hands-on curriculum connections.

Student representatives also provided a broader update on the early effects of the district’s new phone policy. Students and some teachers reported improved classroom attention and richer face-to-face interaction; the board heard specific discipline counts from administration (reported elsewhere in the meeting) but students said free periods like lunch and study hall felt louder and less satisfying without phone access. Student reps recommended more promoted club activities, lunchtime outreach and inclusive programming to keep students engaged outside of class time.

The board accepted the charters for consideration and asked students to remain engaged; no formal policy changes were made at the meeting.
