Summary
District curriculum staff presented 2024–25 DPI accountability results showing improvements in several schools and subgroup reporting; superintendent reported 88 open positions (down from 127 last year) and discussed the role of staffing in sustaining gains.
District curriculum staff and the superintendent presented North Carolina Department of Public Instruction 2024–25 school performance and accountability data, saying assessment results, growth measures and subgroup scores inform school‑by‑school designations and federal long‑term goals under ESSA.
Meredith, the district’s curriculum lead, explained the accountability model’s components: roughly 80% of the composite grade comes from assessments and 20% from growth, and the model reports results for subgroups (e.g., economically disadvantaged, English learners, students with disabilities). She walked the board through reading the packet, including composite grades, growth scores and cohort graduation rates.
Superintendent Dr. Ganey highlighted progress: several schools raised numerical grades—some by double digits—and the district reduced the number of low‑performing schools. He also told the board the district serves about 15,000 students and reported current vacancies: 88 open positions (classified and certified combined), down from about 127 a year earlier; certified classroom vacancies were cited as 12 this year versus 19 last year. Board members noted the complexities of achieving 'growth' versus composite gains and asked staff to continue monitoring subgroup results.
Board and staff discussed state scrutiny of the accountability model and possible future changes; the superintendent said the state superintendent is reviewing the model and any changes would be aligned with the district’s strategic plan.
No formal votes were required for the presentation. Staff invited questions and indicated additional analysis will be provided as part of continuous improvement work.
