New Middletown school construction moves above grade as building committee reports steady progress

Members of the Middletown School Building Committee reported significant on-site progress at the district’s school construction project during the Aug. 21 meeting, saying crews have begun vertical work and large concrete pours as site preparation continues.
Committee members said concrete forms and pours are happening daily, with one of the largest pours planned in the near term. Site work is advancing toward vertical construction and steel erection, and the committee described active coordination between contractor Gilbane and construction manager Colliers. Courtyard clearing and oil-tank removal at the existing high-school site have finished and planning for outdoor learning spaces is underway as the district prepares to repurpose the current high school during the transition.
The committee also discussed efforts to preserve memorials and historically significant elements from older school buildings for incorporation into the new facilities. Members said student participation in memorialization planning will be included.
The committee is centralizing project photos and drone footage to share with the community through project communications and a monthly newsletter. Committee members said Gilbane will provide drone footage and the district will post regular updates so the public can follow construction progress.
