Walnut Creek Council proclaims Human Trafficking Prevention Month and Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Walnut Creek City Council on Tuesday proclaimed January 2026 as Human Trafficking Prevention Month and also designated the month as Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Mayor Kevin Wilk read the human trafficking proclamation, which cited Contra Costa County law-enforcement figures that between October 2024 and October 2025 investigators examined 67 trafficking cases and identified 103 potential victims connected to services. Katrina Natale, director of the Human Trafficking Task Force at the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, said the task force and local partners are developing a March training and outreach event aimed at businesses to help employees identify and report signs of trafficking. "We'll be providing...well designed, attractive notices that they can post in their businesses and really try to strengthen those partnerships," Natale said.
Wilk also read a proclamation recognizing Holocaust Remembrance Day. Rabbi Daniel Stein of Congregation B’nai Shalom accepted the proclamation and urged the community to preserve memory and teach future generations about the Holocaust. "Even in the darkest hours, love was always present," he said.
Both proclamations were ceremonial; the council took no binding policy action on either item. The city said information about the trafficking training will be shared when available.
