Shelbyville Beer Board approves two permits, accepts one withdrawal

The Shelbyville Beer Board on Jan. 14 approved two beer-permit applications and accepted the withdrawal of a third application during a regularly scheduled meeting at City Hall.
John Thomas Butler, sworn in before the board, described his business as “The Chevy Horseshoe Barcade,” saying it would be “a bar that serves beer and snacks, and we have pool tables and” entertainment. Butler told the board his planned hours are generally 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays; he said he expects to employ three people and gave seating capacity as 79. After board members questioned location details and nearby uses, a member moved to approve Butler’s on-premises permit and the board voted to approve the application. The board instructed Butler to pick up the permit at City Hall after 10 a.m. and to bring $100 for the annual privilege tax; staff noted card payments may incur a service fee and commented on future billing timing.
The board also considered an application from Assam Alcantoni for an off-premises permit for Shelbyville Beer and Tacos at 711 Main Street. Alcantoni, who said he has prior experience as a cashier/manager and operates other local businesses, told the board the location will be a convenience store selling beer, groceries and snacks, not a restaurant. He said he intends to staff the business initially with two people and operate generally until 9 or 10 p.m. The board moved to approve Alcantoni’s application; members voted in favor and told him the permit would be ready for pickup at City Hall after 10 a.m., with a $100 privilege-tax payment due at pickup.
Earlier in the meeting the board considered an application from Daniella Vargas for Shelbyville Billiards and Beer at 713 South Cannon Boulevard; Vargas was not present and submitted an email asking to withdraw her application. The board approved the withdrawal request.
The board’s actions were procedural approvals of the applications; no conditions, amendments or suspensions of permits were recorded during discussion. Permits for approved applicants were to be available at City Hall the following day, with instructions to pay the annual privilege tax at that time.
