Frederick trustees expand municipal code to let arts fund support performances, festivals and other creative work

The Town of Frederick Board of Trustees voted unanimously to adopt Ordinance 14‑03, a code amendment that expands the municipal definition of "work of art" and allows the public‑arts fund to be used for performances and other creative activities in addition to visual art.
Planning and arts staff told trustees the amendment revises definitions so that a "work of art" may include "paintings, sculptures, poems, pieces of music, theater productions, or other product of the creative arts" and broadens permitted uses from display and maintenance to also permit presentation and facilitation. Staff recommended approval as part of the town's community and economic vitality strategic plan.
Arts committee members said the change would allow a wider range of public programming such as music and theater performances and art festivals. One committee member noted the committee recently added six new members and expressed enthusiasm for projects including a potential summer concert series.
Trustees approved the ordinance by roll call 5–0.
