Frederick Town approves $1,000 grant for Flight 6-29 memorial

Linda Amor, a member of the Flight 6-29 Memorial Organization, asked Frederick Town trustees on Monday to help fund a memorial at or near the crash footprint in Weld County for the victims and citizen responders of the November 1955 bombing of Flight 6-29.

Amor told the board the flight exploded about 10 minutes after takeoff from Stapleton, killing 44 people. She said investigators later determined the crash was a deliberate act and that the bomber was prosecuted for an associated murder but that many victims received little public recognition. "Our goal for a memorial is really just to remember all those people who perished and the citizen responders," Amor said.

Board members asked about project cost and timing. Amor said final design choices will drive the price but estimated a granite-and-bronze memorial could cost on the order of $50,000–$75,000 and that the group is early in fundraising and has received some support from neighboring towns and organizations. She said the project team has identified a footprint in Weld County (in the area now partly within Firestone) and is coordinating with Longmont, Firestone and other nearby jurisdictions.

Mayor Pro Tem Brown moved to award a $1,000 community grant to Flight 6-29 Memorial (Unsung Heroes Across America Inc.). A second was recorded. The board voted 5–0 to approve the grant.

The grant is a planning-level contribution; Amor said the organization will return to the board with progress updates and additional funding requests as design and fundraising continue.
