The Ithaca City Landmark Preservation Commission on Jan. 20 reviewed a preliminary proposal for a new carport at 407 East Buffalo Street and voted to delegate final approval to staff after providing design feedback. Applicant Noah Demarest of Stream Collaborative explained the revised plan: a 22-foot-wide, 15-foot-deep timber-frame carport with an extended cantilever to cover vehicles fully and elimination of the center post that currently prevents vehicle doors from opening.
Commissioners generally supported the conceptual design, noting it improves vehicle clearance and is visually compatible with the property, while advising modest changes including additional roof overhang at the sides and attention to the back drip edge. The applicant acknowledged the project will require a zoning variance for the setback and said the design team would pursue that process after confirming the commission’s support in principle.
Ed Finnegan moved that the commission delegate final approval to staff with the understanding staff will circulate final details for any last comments. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff will advise the applicant on variance requirements and will finalize design details consistent with the ILPC guidelines before issuing administrative approval.
