Council approves alternate plan for City Park — pickleball courts moved, basketball courts rebuilt

The Dallas City Council unanimously approved an alternate proposal to relocate new pickleball courts to the south side of City Park and build new basketball courts on the north side.
Public Works Director Jennifer Ward told the council the flip reduces costs and shortens the construction schedule because it avoids excavating and refilling an old buried pool at the originally proposed site. Ward said staff surveyed the public (about 192 respondents) and presented the survey results and Parks Board recommendation to the council.
Support Services Supervisor Michael Pierce answered technical questions: the plan calls for an acrylic surfacing over the existing blacktop (matching existing local courts), with striping and sealing; surfacing requires sustained temperatures of about 60°F, so pickleball courts will be completed in warmer weather and the project is expected to be ready by summer. Pierce said the courts will be encompassed by fencing to separate play from the adjacent street and creek; basketball courts may not require fencing initially but could be fenced later if needed.
Councilor Shane moved to approve the alternate proposal; Councilor Schilling seconded. The motion passed unanimously by voice vote.
What happens next: staff will implement the site plan, schedule work in accordance with seasonal constraints for acrylic surfacing and proceed with construction funded in part from park system development charges.
