Police Chief Jerry Mott summarized community safety goals for the council on Jan. 5, saying the city continues to pursue a path to design and build a new police station after voters rejected a bond in May 2025. "Voters did not approve a bond to fund a police station," Mott said, and staff have since pursued value‑engineering and alternative funding approaches.
Mott said the department is conducting community education ahead of any future measure and trying to correct "incorrect information that's floating around" about the project. Outreach includes small‑ and medium‑group presentations with HOAs and neighborhood clubs. He also described preparedness work: "Every school building, every school in this city is now an evacuation center available to us if we need it," and said police staff have access to school emergency evacuation plans.
Mott said the council has not yet chosen a final funding path and that community education and additional analysis will continue. Chief Wallace will join neighborhood meetings during fire season to coordinate disaster preparedness.
Next steps: staff will continue value engineering, refine funding options, expand outreach and return to council when a preferred funding method is identified.
