Council backs airport advisory committee request: send letter urging Valley County include avigation easements

The McCall City Council on Aug. 14 approved sending a letter, drafted by the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC), asking the Valley County Board of Commissioners to include avigation easements in a proposed nearby subdivision approval. The council authorized the mayor to sign the letter on behalf of the city and the AAC and asked staff to include an illustrative map of the airport influence area when the letter is transmitted.
City staff and the AAC said avigation easements (the language used in the meeting) provide a durable notice on property titles about aviation‑related restrictions and hazards near an airport, such as building heights and features that attract wildlife. The AAC and city airport manager argued these protections are more secure when recorded on plats rather than left to private covenants (CC&Rs), which can be changed in the future.
Council agreed to sign the AAC letter, with a first paragraph noting the letter is submitted on behalf of the McCall City Council, the Airport Advisory Committee and the aviation community. Council asked staff to attach a map clearly showing the overlay of the airport's airspace or approach zones relevant to the proposed development.
The motion to send the letter passed on a roll‑call vote with Council members Nielsen, Nelson, Mayor Giles and Thrower recorded as voting yes.
