Moffat County approves Orsted MET tower for wind-resource data collection

The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners approved a conditional-use permit for a single meteorological (MET) tower proposed by Orsted after the county planning commission recommended approval.
Candace Miller, planning and zoning coordinator, told the board the MET tower will sit on a parcel roughly 37 miles northwest of Craig and will remain in place for about six months to a couple of years to collect wind data to assess viability for future wind projects. Miller said the project involves minimal ground disturbance — no concrete foundations — and the tower can be installed in a few days and removed in a similar timeframe.
Miller said the planning board met last week, received no public opposition and recommended approval with no conditions. Orsted representatives on the record indicated the company may seek additional conditional-use permits for further monitoring sites if the data support more locations.
The board voted to approve application C‑25‑06. No public testimony in opposition was recorded during the hearing.
