Superintendent spotlights CTE opportunities, strategic plan timeline and an upcoming reunification drill

Superintendent Dr. Bernier used his report at Tuesday’s Duval County School Board meeting to highlight the district’s career and technical education (CTE) offerings, outline the timeline for a new strategic plan and warn families about an upcoming reunification safety exercise.
Bernier said the district offers more than 20 CTE programs across 16 schools in clusters such as arts and AV technology, marketing, and business management. He noted partnerships with VyStar Credit Union that provide paid summer internships for students and on-campus credit union branches at six high schools. "Students learn technical skills like camera operation, video editing, graphic design, and multimedia presentations… Through hands on projects and real world experiences, they also gain essential business skills," Bernier said.
A Douglas Anderson School of the Arts student, Jay Laquoir, described how the Literary Arts Academy and its entrepreneurship course taught website creation and business skills. "I have attained the skill needed to both create a website and use it to its full potential to promote myself and my work on the Internet," Jay said.
Bernier also said Senate Bill 296, approved by Governor Ron DeSantis, will give school districts local control over start times and requires additional state reporting. He outlined a schedule for approving the district's strategic plan: a workshop June 18, data review on July 15, and final plan approval on Aug. 5.
On safety, Bernier announced a reunification drill scheduled for Thursday, June 5. He said the active-assailant exercise will be staged at Mayport Middle with reunification at Fletcher High between about 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., and that the exercise will involve extra police and fire presence. "Nothing's gone wrong. We're practicing in case something does," Bernier said, asking principals to notify families through school communications.
Bernier also reminded families that summer VPK and Summer Bridge programs start in early June and urged parents to register for bus transportation for the next school year via the district's online portal.
