Commission transmits Summerland Key land-use amendment to state for review

Monroe County commissioners voted Jan. 15 to transmit to the state land planning agency a proposed comprehensive-plan future-land-use change for the property at 24150 Overseas Highway, Summerland Key. The change would convert the parcel from Residential Medium to Commercial on the future land-use map.
Donald Craig, representing the applicant, addressed the board and said the rezoning would allow a reasonable commercial use of the property and reduce pressure on ROGO allocations because a commercial designation does not allow residential unit allocation under current county rules.
Commissioner Rice moved to transmit the amendment to the state for review and Commissioner Lincoln seconded; board members approved the transmission. Staff said the transmission is a preliminary step and that the board will consider adoption at a later meeting after state review.
Why it matters: Transmitting a future-land-use map amendment starts the state review phase for a local plan change that, if later adopted, would change allowable land uses and potential zoning outcomes for the parcel at Summerland Key.
