County IT wins $100,000 cybersecurity grant, approves $321,765 RingCentral services budget

Craven County’s information technology department told commissioners July 21 that it had been awarded a $100,000 state and local cybersecurity grant to improve the county’s cybersecurity monitoring and detection capabilities.
IT Director Steve Bennett said the grant funds will reimburse the county for an enterprise-grade IT security monitoring system that analyzes activity across county IT systems for signs of cyberattacks and vulnerabilities. The board approved a budget amendment to accept and spend the reimbursable grant funds.
Bennett also briefed the board on a planned transition of the county’s phone system to a RingCentral cloud communications platform. County staff determined the arrangement meets the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Statement 96 definition of a subscription-based information-technology arrangement (SBITA). Commissioners approved a $321,765 budget amendment for RingCentral services and devices that were previously approved in the county budget process.
Both items passed by roll call.
