Craven County accepts $33,000 Bate Foundation grant for youth leagues and park safety upgrades

Craven County commissioners voted July 21 to accept a $33,000 grant from the Harold Bate Foundation to support youth leagues and park safety and accessibility improvements.
Parks and Recreation Director Mark Seymour told commissioners the $33,000 award includes $13,000 for annual youth-league support — an item already included in the FY25–26 budget — and $20,000 for safety netting between fields and several accessible picnic tables at Creekside and West Craven Parks. Seymour said the county will provide a $20,000 local match, and the safety and accessibility additions are expected to be completed in fall 2025.
The board approved accepting the grant and the related $40,000 budget amendment to cover the grant and required match.
