Craven County accepts $33,000 Bate Foundation grant; approves $40,000 budget amendment including county match

Craven County accepted a $33,000 grant from the Harold Bate Foundation and approved a related $40,000 budget amendment on July 21 to fund youth league support and safety and accessibility improvements at county parks.
Mark Seymour, Parks and Recreation, said $13,000 of the award represents annual support for youth league programming and that $20,000 is earmarked for safety netting and accessible picnic tables at Creekside and West Craven Parks. The county is providing a $20,000 match for the safety and accessibility portion; commissioners approved the acceptance of the grant and the budget amendment by roll call.
Seymour told the board the safety netting between fields should reduce foul balls affecting adjacent fields, and that installations and picnic-table purchases are anticipated in fall 2025. Commissioners noted longstanding partnership with the Bate Foundation.
