Craven County accepts $100,000 cybersecurity grant and approves $321,765 RingCentral subscription budget

Craven County’s information technology department reported two approvals July 21: acceptance of a $100,000 federal grant to bolster cybersecurity and a $321,765 budget amendment to implement a RingCentral cloud communications subscription.
Steve Bennett, information-technology director, said the $100,000 award from the State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program will be used to deploy an enterprise-grade security monitoring system to detect cyber attacks and vulnerabilities. The grant is reimbursement-based under grant terms; commissioners approved the associated budget amendment.
Bennett also told the board the county has evaluated moving its phone system to RingCentral’s cloud-based communications platform and determined the arrangement qualifies as a subscription-based information-technology arrangement under Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement 96. The board approved a budget amendment for $321,765 to cover RingCentral services and devices.
Motions to approve both budget amendments were moved, seconded and approved by roll call; the transcript records affirmative votes for commissioners present.
