SPCSA accepts Battle Born Academy’s voluntary surrender; appoints administrator to oversee closure

The State Public Charter School Authority voted on June 25 to accept the Battle Born Academy board’s voluntary surrender of its charter and to approve the school’s closure plan and administrator.
SPCSA Executive Director Melissa Makadan reported that the BBA board voted on June 18 to surrender the charter and close the school after the 2024–25 school year. Makadan said staff supports the board’s decision and recommended the authority accept the board’s actions and the appointment of Joshua Kern to manage the closure process.
At the meeting, a motion from Board Member Ivar Aldaba to accept the surrender, approve Kern’s appointment, approve the closure plan and direct SPCSA staff to work with Kern was seconded by Member Shanti Rosales. The board voted in favor and the motion carried by voice vote. The transcript records affirmative responses and the chair announced the motion carried.
Why it matters: SPCSA staff said it will work with Kern to meet the statutory requirements for closure and to support the remaining students who are still enrolled. The agency will coordinate deadlines, logistics and outreach to help transfer students to other schools where space exists.
SPCSA staff noted Kern had been active immediately after the June 18 board vote and said he would submit a written report detailing steps taken and next steps in the closure process. The agency emphasized it will help with student transitions and with required filings under Nevada law.
