Faculty honored for teaching, research and service; SACSCOC reaffirmation materials and timeline presented

Provost John Liu recognized several faculty award recipients during the Academic and Student Affairs Committee meeting and provided the committee with the university's SACSCOC reaffirmation timeline.
Liu announced the Outstanding Faculty Award for Professional Service went to Dr. Steve Canfield, a professor of mechanical engineering, and the Kaplan Research Award went to Dr. Muhammad Ismail, an associate professor in computer science who directs the CEROT cybersecurity center. Dr. Charles Dao (economics/finance/marketing) and Dr. Crystal Kennedy (curriculum and instruction) were also recognized for teaching awards.
On accreditation, Liu reminded trustees that SACSCOC's reaffirmation is a long cycle; Tennessee Tech's cycle that began in 2016 will conclude next year. Liu said two required documents—the Compliance Certification Report and the Quality Enhancement Plan—are due to SACSCOC in September and that the offsite and onsite reviews are planned for late 2025 and spring 2026, respectively. Associate Provost Sharon Hoa was noted as the campus lead overseeing compliance work.
Why it matters: regular reaffirmation by SACSCOC is required for institutional accreditation; the QEP is the university's opportunity to demonstrate a sustained improvement strategy tied to student learning and success.
Next steps: the university will finalize the Compliance Certification and QEP drafts this summer and proceed with the scheduled reviews next academic year.
