Norwood Airport fence alignment amended to satisfy FAA sight‑line requirements
Summary
The Conservation Commission amended an earlier order of conditions for the Norwood Airport wildlife fence (DEP 251‑0566) to allow the fence to remain on its existing alignment where FAA approach lighting and runway visibility constraints require it; the commission moved a small portion out of wetlands where feasible.

The Norwood Conservation Commission on May 28 approved an amendment to an Order of Conditions for the Norwood Airport wildlife fence project (DEP 251‑0566 / Norwood N2024‑22) to reflect an alignment required by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Alyssa Jacobs of Epsilon Associates, representing the airport, told the commission that after consultation with the FAA the fence needed to be restored to its original alignment in sections where moving it closer to the airfield would impair approach lighting sight lines and runway visibility zones, particularly where the two runways intersect. Jacobs said the revised plans still reduced the amount of work in wetlands where possible, but the agency guidance constrained changes in other locations.
The commission voted to amend the order of conditions to match the FAA‑driven alignment. Airport Manager Mark Raven, who was present, said the change was driven by safety and regulatory requirements. The motion passed on a roll call: Kelsey Quinlan, Catherine Walsh and Anil Prasad voted in favor; Kalima Mustafa Woodburg was absent.
Why it matters: Airport fencing projects touch wetlands and resource areas along runway corridors; federal aviation safety requirements can limit design options. The amendment preserves the airport’s compliance with FAA guidance while the commission restricted additional wetland impacts where feasible.
Next steps: The airport will continue with the amended plan and keep the commission apprised of any on‑site work in jurisdictional areas.
