Rockdale County celebrates student research winners and Salem High state track champions

The Rockdale County Board of Education recognized students from across the district on May 20 during a year-in-review presentation and award ceremony.
Peaks Chapel Elementary principal Shavon Beckett introduced fifth-grader Gabrielle Richmond, who recited a poem and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The board then viewed a compilation of student accomplishments for the 2024–25 school year, including social studies fair winners from Peaks Chapel, Lorraine Elementary, CJ Hicks and other schools; National History Day finalists from middle and high schools; and a long list of state-level athletic achievements.
Salem High School was highlighted for track and field achievements at the Georgia High School Association Class 2A state championships. The district announced Salem’s 4x400 relay as state champions and said the team set a school record with a time of 3:23.55. Senior LaTerence Fleming was recognized as the 300-meter hurdles state champion with a recorded time of 37.79 seconds and for signing a track scholarship with Grambling State University. Other Salem athletes who contributed to the relay and placed at state — including Jacoby Davis, CJ Franklin, Caleb Williams, Daniel Ward, Johnny Sterling and LaTerence Fleming — were called forward for recognition.
The presentation also named students advancing to state and national competitions in social studies fairs and National History Day categories from multiple schools, and acknowledged teachers and sponsors. The board recessed briefly to congratulate students before continuing the meeting.
The recognitions were presented as ceremonial acknowledgments; no board action was required to confer the awards presented in the meeting’s program.
