Saline County commissioners discussed fireworks regulation May 27 and gave staff direction to draft a resolution that would keep the current sale window, oppose permanent year-round retail sales in the county and consider narrowing the dates and times when fireworks may be discharged.
County staff briefed commissioners on changes in state law (Senate Bill 199) and on the fact that the City of Salina intends to keep its current rules (discharge allowed July 3–4 inside city limits; county allowed discharge June 27–July 5). Commissioners expressed concerns about year‑round retail sales, livestock and pet impacts, and the effect on residents (including veterans and people with trauma triggers). Several commissioners favored aligning county discharge dates more closely with the city or otherwise narrowing the allowed discharge window.
Commissioner Hay asked that special events with permits be allowed to purchase fireworks from local licensed vendors year-round for permitted displays; commissioners asked staff to draft language that would permit sales to licensed vendors for permitted events but not allow general year-round retail sales to the public.
Commissioners directed staff to prepare a resolution that would (1) oppose permanent year‑round retail sales in Saline County, (2) keep sale dates the same and (3) propose a narrowed discharge window; staff said it would return with draft language at a future meeting. No formal resolution or ordinance vote occurred at the May 27 meeting.
